For much of human history, plant medicine was our primary form of health care, only somewhat recently moving to pharmaceuticals. While they provide benefits and have advanced medical science, we find ourselves overwhelmed with prescription drugs and a for-profit healthcare system. That’s why Super Natural NiA set out to return people to their roots with natural remedies and self-care.

Super Natural NiA is a local health and wellness business focusing on using all-organic teas to help with various ailments. Lynn H., the business owner, named it after the African/Swahili word for “purpose.”

“It makes you think about what your goal in life is and what you aim to do with your life,” she said. True to the word, Lynn drew inspiration during the lockdown last year and opened the business in June of 2020. She said she felt the desire to promote health and wellness since people were so afraid during the pandemic of becoming sick.

Types of Teas

Specializing in different tea blends, available loose or bagged, Super Natural NiA offers several teas with ingredients originating from countries like South Africa, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, and even here in the United States.

Lynn added that the quality control for all ingredients is handled in Alfred, Ontario, and Australia. The material for her tea bags is made from natural papers.

Some of these include blends like ‘Peachy Keen.’ This is a black tea made with peach and apricot, consisting of calendula and osmanthus petals. According to Lynn, this blend helps with healing wounds, menstrual cycles, and even stroke.

Another blend she offers is ‘Chillax,’ an Egyptian chamomile tea. This herbal, caffeine-free tea option aids with digestion, blood sugar, and heart health. It also reduces stress, helps with sleep, and works as an anti-inflammatory. One could say it helps with “tranquili-tea.”

‘I Like Roses,’ a green tea option blended with cherry and rose petals, originates from Hunan, China. This mix helps prevent type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, aids weight loss, supports brain health.

There is even a matcha green tea powder blend available, coming from Kagoshima and Kyoto, Japan. High in antioxidants, this tea boost brain function, promotes liver and heart health and may help prevent cancer.

“My personal favorite tea is ‘Roy-Bows’ which is Rooibos, rosehips, lavender, elderberry, rose petals, and currants,” Lynn shared. Also full of antioxidants, some of the health benefits of this tea include supporting heart health and helping with insomnia and type 2 diabetes.

Disclaimer

According to the business’s disclaimer on their website, the FDA hasn’t approved or confirmed the health benefits associated with the tea blends. Super Natural NiA affirms that they aren’t claiming to “cure, diagnose, heal or prevent any disease or medical conditions.”

Aside from the disclaimer, studies suggest that different teas and herbal blends may help with various medical conditions, like those mentioned above.

Other Products and Services Super Natural NiA Offers

In addition to tea blends, Super Natural NiA sells tea accessories, like an infuser ball and even an infuser water bottle to steep tea on-the-go. The business also offers a Supplemental Consultation for $65, on sale for $50 right now.

The consultation is done by Linda Baptiste Burke, a certified herbal consultant, and a certified CBD online dispensary owner. During this 30-minute session, clients complete a questionnaire about their health and any medical conditions they experience. Burke then provides them with a personalized herbal recommendation within a few days.

This recommendation isn’t intended to replace medical protocols. Always consult with your doctor before using new products or making changes to your medication.

Goals and Challenges

Lynn said her biggest goal is to expand her store to offer more products and to deliver internationally. She also plans to offer workshops in the future to teach people how to take care of themselves holistically. Her biggest challenge with running her business has been learning how to market her products.

“There are so many avenues to utilize in marketing your products you have to really know your way around social media,” she said. “I‘m still working on these challenges, but there’s light up ahead.”

Another challenge she faces stems from the pandemic itself – access to her ingredients.

“The pandemic has definitely affected my ability to acquire any of my products by slowing down shipping,” she explained. In response to this, the website lets customers know that some orders may take up to 25 days for shipping and handling, depending on certain ingredients’ availability.

#GetinMotion with Super Natural NiA

Overall, Lynn said that she would like to see people “be more health-conscious as a community and a society.”

“I’ve learned that in this business, there are so many people relying on medicine instead of going back to nature as our elders did long ago. Also, I think if there were more alternative medicine education tools available, people would take advantage of it.”

She added that her favorite part of this business and the work she does is the fulfillment she receives from it. In particular, she loves having the ability to answer people’s questions about what they can take besides prescription medicine that’d help with their ailments.

“I can help them with a better alternative with fewer side effects,” she said. “That is truly awesome when you see their face light up and [they] say ‘Thank You!’”
