Live, Love, Bake – Baking Turned Business
There are so many delicious treats in the world of baking. That love for creating baked goods led my friend, Kayla Robinson, to start her own business – Kayla’s Kustom Sweets. I recently interviewed her about her local online baking business creating dessert cups, dipped treats, and gift boxes.
Starting Kayla’s Kustom Sweets
Robinson shared that she started her baking business a little over a year ago out of her passion for baking.
“I actually just passed my one year anniversary of when I was baking one day, and I took a picture and said to myself, “Wow, these turned out really nice,” Robinson said. “From there, I started self-teaching myself how to decorate cupcakes, use fondant, use chocolate molds, and dip any and everything if it was possible.”
She then explained how this eventually became more than just a hobby.
“I did the math and saw the possible clientele opportunities and thought this could be a second income for me,” she said. “I slowly started selling to my friends and family, and my business [grew] from there.”
Kayla’s Favorite Part About Baking
When asked about what she likes most about baking, Robinson said she loves trying different designs, themes, and colors.
“I love when I get booked for a party, and it’s a theme or colors I have never done before,” she explained. “It gives me a chance to show my creative side and really show what I am capable of doing when someone just gives me their vision.”
Kayla’s Kustom Sweets creates many different treats for all major celebrations and special events.
“I offer cupcakes and dipped treats for events such as birthdays, parties, weddings, [and more],” Robinson said. “Every now and then, I do different cake designs as well.”
Choosing A Creative Name
When asked about how she came up with her business name, Robinson said, “Well, there is my name, Kayla, and then I thought to myself these are “custom” sweets, but it needs to be different. [So then] came along the ‘K’ in “Kustom” and then of course “Sweets” for sweet treats.”

Baking And Its Positive Effects
Over the past two years, the pandemic took a toll on people’s mental health, with rates of depression and stress skyrocketing. If you’re stuck in the house figuring out how to use your time better, baking something can help.
Even before the pandemic, several studies suggested that creative activities like baking provide mindfulness benefits. For example, the Journal of Positive Psychology published a study suggesting that people who take up small creative projects like baking or cooking reported feeling happier and more relaxed in their everyday lives. It can be very therapeutic and a form of self-care for many people, especially these days.
Baking: A Hobby That Everyone Can Enjoy
I think baking improves your mental health because it’s an outlet and an escape for creative expression. It also showcases how you’re in complete control in the kitchen.
When I was a little girl, I would always have fun baking with my sister. We’d make so many cupcakes and even a whole cake just for fun (and of course, because we LOVED sweets.) We would also buy many decorating items and go all out to make the treats look even better.
Baking can be super fun, creative, and even messy, which is okay! It makes the entire experience even better.
Whether you want to pick up a new skill, use your time productively, or just make your life a little more exciting, baking helps make things more fun. It also gives you the chance to explore new ingredients that may improve your health. Just make sure not to use too much sugar!
There are many advantages to baking, and it’s a hobby all ages can enjoy. You can be as creative as you want or even bake special treats for others. This spreads kindness, which positively affects us and those around us. So, whatever you choose to bake, remember to have fun!
