Community Guidelines

If you are looking to join our community, please review our guidelines to ensure a constructive environment.

In our attempt to unify, we encourage healthy, objective, and open-minded conversation between our community members, with the intent to form ideas, compromises, and solutions. To maintain a positive, respectful environment, we’ve formed a collection of community guidelines for both our team and our community members to follow.

Please bear in mind that this is a living document; it will evolve as we do and as needed to reflect the needs of our community as well as the mission of our organization.

What is Considered Okay and Not Okay to Post or Publish

*This list of guidelines applies to team members AND community members.

Any person on the site, making content on the site, or otherwise using the site or its peripherals, is subject to these guidelines and the standards of the organization, and is therefore subject to any appropriate consequences of violations to this list, and any other agreements between the organization and the person in question.

If you are uncertain of the allowance for what you intend to post or publish, we ask you to please use critical thinking skills and common sense to form your own discretion for the acceptability of your content or words.

If you are still uncertain or feel that something is not clearly defined for the rest of the community, please contact us to submit a suggestion for edit/clarification!

We happily encourage our community to point out anything that is not properly explained or is not covered in our guidelines or needs adjustment or improvement. We wish to grow with our community, and as part of that ongoing effort, we will consider all reasonable guideline suggestions and alterations. If we feel it is a valid change or addition, we will amend the guidelines to reflect the needs of the community in order to grow as an organization.

This is kind and respectful space, where there are  discussion and debate can be held without personal attacks. If you’re part of this community we assume you’re here for that reason – to have real conversations, not fights.

If you see anything on our site or see a member of our team or community engaging in actions that violate these guidelines, please report it to us at contact@mimmag.com.

Social Media Fights

As we’ve frequently stated, this platform is not to be used in the way other platforms have been allowed to. Absolutely no fights about issues will be allowed. If you can’t maintain mutual respect and understanding, you will not be allowed to be a part of the conversation here.

This is a platform for people who are tired of arguing and are ready to discuss issues to come together to find solutions and compromise where/when needed. This is a platform for people to share and discuss ideas in an environment where their opinions may be countered, but still respected. This is a platform for people that wish to be a part of the solution. This is a platform for productive conversation and debate.

As such, to maintain our mission, and our platform expectations, any fighting of any kind will not be tolerated. People who take away from the conversation or go against our standards and our mission will lose the privilege of being a part of the conversation. Offenders will lose posting privileges, and those who repeat this offense may risk having their membership revoked.

This includes calling people names, attacking their appearances, or making libelous/defamatory statements against people.

Objectively Divisive Language

As previously mentioned, our goal of this platform is to bring people together and build respect for one another despite our differences. We wish to unify people, and fight division.

As such, language that is considered genuinely divisive will not be allowed.

As a general rule we maintain that divisive language involves any language that goes against community guidelines and the organization’s values or missions. This includes the use of blanketed statement for any groups. Derogatory statements or words meant to minimize, demean, attack, or otherwise harm another person will not be tolerated.

We maintain that this platform is to establish and maintain the respect of others and their opinions and their stances on issues.

You are allowed to disagree with or rebut what others say. No one is going to change your mind but yourself. And no one is going to change anyone else’s mind with opinions alone. As such, just because you disagree with someone, or someone disagrees with you, it does not give license to attack the other person, stereotype them, or blanket them in a group and seek to divide from them over that difference in opinion.

In general, we ask that common sense and mutual respect is maintained in any language used or content submitted on our platform. If you use language that could be considered divisive, but you feel that it is not, you must provide proof or evidence of that division, or it must be qualified as a generally acceptable divisive statement.

An example of this is our stance on Nazism and white supremacy. The divide between us and them in this respect is apparent and true and will be maintained. If you feel your divisive language is justified in this respect, we will allow it, although it may be subject to review.

Harmful or Dangerous Content

Content that aims to encourage dangerous or illegal activities that risk serious physical harm or death is not allowed on M.i.M. Mag.

Do not post content on M.i.M. Mag if it fits any of the descriptions noted below.

  • Instructions to kill or harm: Showing viewers how to perform activities meant to kill or maim others, such as providing instructions on how to build a bomb meant to injure or kill people;
  • Hard drug use or creation: Content that depicts people abusing controlled substances such as cocaine or opioids, or content providing instructions on how to create drugs, (discussion of past drug use may be allowed);
  • Extremely dangerous challenges: Challenges that pose imminent risk of physical injury such as the choking game, fire challenge, detergent-eating challenges, the “no lackin’ challenge,” or hot water challenge;
  • Dangerous or threatening pranks: Pranks that lead victims to fear imminent serious physical danger, or that create serious emotional distress in minors;
  • Making fun of mental health: Content in which people with mental illnesses are made fun of or ridiculed;
  • Encouraging eating disorders: Content in which people suffering eating disorders are praised for weight loss or binging/purging, are bragging about it, or are encouraging others to imitate the behavior, or content body shaming people or encouraging eating disorders;
  • Violent Events: Promoting or glorifying violent tragedies, such as mass shootings;
  • Instructional theft: Showing users how to steal money or tangible goods;
  • Instructional hacking and phishing: Showing users how to bypass secure computer systems or steal user credentials and personal data;
  • Swatting: Calling law enforcement on someone under accusation of a false crime, resulting in SWAT or some other entity responding and causing any kind of harm or damage to someone/their property as a result.

Please note this is not a complete list.

Do not post content showing a minor participating in dangerous activity, or encouraging minors to engage in dangerous activities. Never put minors or other people in harmful situations that may lead to injury, including dangerous stunts, dares, or pranks.

Any kind of threat or otherwise threatening language.

Coinciding with calls for violence or incitement of it, we will not tolerate any user on or off our platform threatening a team member, another community member, or any group of people in any way, shape, or form. Any violation of this standard will result in termination of membership.

Language that is intolerant or hate speech (especially in the extreme).

We recognize that this can be subjective in some respects. We do not condone language that acts to intentionally minimize a group of people or wish them harm, incite violence or negative views of an entire group, etc. Disagreement with an opinion or view is not automatically intolerant or hateful. Intolerant and hateful language will be reviewed and determined in comparison to community expectations and organizational standards.

Members who violate this will lose posting privileges, or their membership if they repeat this offense.

Plagiarism of any kind.

It should go without saying that plagiarism by our contributors or our community members will not be tolerated on this platform and any content found to be plagiarized will be removed.

Anyone caught plagiarizing with intent will lose posting privileges or be removed entirely from the site, depending on the situation.

Anyone caught plagiarizing but did so unintentionally (i.e., not properly citing a source in content produced when necessary) will temporarily lose posting privileges and be on “probation”.

Any repeat offenses may lead to collaboration or membership being revoked if necessary.

Any work found to contain plagiarism will be removed from the site.

What is Okay

Conversation performed in a respectful, objective manner.

We will not filter or monitor for bias or incorrect information. It is up to each individual community member to maintain their own credibility, their own positions, and their own voice. Hold yourself to a high standard. Try to see the other side, see from new perspectives, and be open to new information, even if it is conflicting. Try to provide evidence where you can in order to back up any statements you make.

We advocate for everyone to use critical thinking in their words, their responses, their actions, and their positions.

It’s okay to be wrong sometimes. But that also means that not everyone is right. It is up to you to determine if you believe or agree with something. It is up to you to research or otherwise look into new information that you’re processing, before making an opinion about it.

Conversation that is productive.

If you don’t have something nice or productive to say or add to a conversation, then consider not saying it. And with that said, being nice does not imply agreeing with the other person or changing your views on an issue. It means to be kind and respectful. We’re here to have a conversation and make positive changes in the world and see the world from different perspectives. Treat this how you would treat being in a debate or conversation with an actual person in front of you. Being behind a keyboard makes us forget sometimes that there is a real person on the other end of our words. Don’t disconnect yourself for the sake of your argument.

In general, try to be mindful of the words you use and how you present your ideas and statements. Without saying anyone needs to walk on eggshells, just consider how someone else will take your words. Will it come off as divisive or offensive? If it might, but you don’t intend it to be interpreted that way, consider altering your words to better get your point across, or include a disclaimer that doesn’t simply excuse a negative or offensive remark. Meta-commentary (commentary about what you’ve said or are trying to say) can go a long way!

For example, if you say you don’t mean to offend anyone, or don’t mean any disrespect, but then blatantly do that exact thing, it does not exempt you from the guidelines. But, if you think you’ve said something offensive, and can explain more concisely what you’re actually trying to say, it may come off as less offensive to the other person/people involved. In other words, use meta-commentary to clarify as soon as possible if you feel you’ve made a gaffe.

Try to see how you can positively add or contribute to a discussion. Try to offer a view that was overlooked. Let people know where the flaws in their arguments are without tearing down their character or their intentions.

We’re here to grow together, to learn and progress as a community and as a society.

Corrective language that doesn’t attack the other person’s character.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But if your statement is not backed by facts and is able to be disproved, then be prepared for others to point out errors in your arguments. That being said, to those who do the pointing out, do so respectfully. Do not call people names, attack their intelligence, etc. Let them know where their argument is incorrect or where their understanding is lacking. But be prepared to provide evidence to back up that claim/counter-claim you’re making.

Opinionated statements and conversation.

Remember that if these are not factual/you haven’t done your research/or otherwise make a statement that is ignorant in some way, people will point it out. You are entitled to your opinion, but please keep an open mind in the case that you may have incorrect/incomplete knowledge about an issue you’re commenting on. You are of course always allowed to maintain or alter your position as you feel comfortable. But you will not be allowed to use the report system because someone proved you wrong in some respect. Remember, it’s okay to say you don’t know enough about a subject to have an opinion about it.

Here we advocate for learning and understanding. Through that, we must have a general respect for one another. That includes listening to what “the other side” has to say. And keep in mind that you can relate with and have an understanding with others you don’t agree with, without compromising your beliefs, if you don’t want to. We can all respectfully agree or disagree without perpetuating this divide we keep between us and others.

Try to overcome cognitive dissonance when presented with new or conflicting information. It’s okay if you were wrong. What is not okay is to be willfully ignorant about something when presented with real evidence (ex. People who believe the Earth is flat, that the Sun revolves around the Earth, that vaccines cause Autism, that climate change is a hoax, etc). And that doesn’t mean that every time conflicting evidence is presented to you, the evidence is accurate, or the other person is correct. You must decide if it’s accurate; you can’t rely on others to fact check for you all the time. You have to think critically about that information that conflicts with your beliefs or opinions. You have to determine if the evidence is objective and accurate enough to make you consider changing your position on something.

Remember that this is a conversation. A debate. A discussion. You won’t change everyone’s opinion, just as everyone isn’t going to change yours. Only you can allow yourself to change your opinion of things. And remember that change often means growth and understanding.

Profanity is okay, but with certain limits.

No words will be blocked, but keep in mind that they are flagged for review by our moderators. Anything found to be in violation of our standards will be removed. The general rule here is to not say profanity that is specifically directed at anyone in a derogatory, defaming, or offensive manner.  Basically, context is important! Use those sentence enhancers as you deem appropriate!

In general, as long as profanity and otherwise disrespectful, demeaning language are not used to attack someone at the other end of a conversation, someone on the forums, authors, other members, etc., it will most likely be allowed. Use your discretion and common sense. Remember, they’re *sentence enhancers*.
