Viva La Compost Still Helping the Community Decrease its Carbon Footprint

Viva La Compost Food Waste Pick-Up Service

Already having been almost entirely a contactless service and being an essential business like other waste removal programs, Viva La Compost has continued to provide a food-waste pick-up service to Las Vegas during the pandemic.

Veronica Sicairos, founder and owner of Viva La Compost, shared how the pandemic affected her business when it first started, with having lost three subscribers as well as her commercial clients due to the shutdown of non-essential business.

“They were looking for bills to cut back because of the layoffs. I actually kind of was expecting it and probably would have done the same in their position,” Sicairos said. “But of course my main concern was the same as everyone else’s – to do whatever it took to flatten the curve and stop the spread of the Coronavirus.”

Decreasing the Community’s Carbon Footprint

Viva La Compost provides an essential service to the community by helping people to decrease their carbon footprint and cut back on their food waste through composting. “Luckily we are essential and we were able to keep operating because what we do is very important – as much as garbage day!” Veronica said. “But I believe it’s way more beneficial in many ways.”

By keeping this waste out of landfills and redirecting it to a composting facility, it not only reduces the greenhouse gases that would be emitted at a landfill, but it gets converted into nutritious soil. This soil, rich in organic matter, is then distributed to local farms and even donated to local school gardens and community gardens.

Responding to the Pandemic

With clients leaving their food-waste containers outside for pick-up, Viva La Compost was already contactless.

“Our response was of course to follow all the guidelines of the CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), [and other] federal agencies to ensure our clients that we were doing our part to keep everyone and ourselves safe,” Veronica said. “There wasn’t much change for us, so there wasn’t much to adapt except for wearing face masks and taking extra precautions, which wasn’t a big deal. What was important to me was safety!”

Despite the initial drop in customers at the beginning of the pandemic, Veronica actually saw an increase in interest from people in the community for her service. “To my surprise, after a few weeks, there was suddenly a spike in inquiries and subscribers! I have not done much marketing at all except what little I have posted on social media,” Veronica said.

She went on to say, “I’m very lucky to have the best clients that share the same passion as me when it comes to sustainability. They have shared a lot about the services I offer, and that’s how most people come to find out about my company.”

A contributing factor to the increase in interest may, in part, have to do with people having been home cooking more over the past couple of months, as well as people doing more outdoor activities in their yards.

“With the shutdown, everyone was home cooking, which got them to see how much food can go to waste. But [there] was also an increase in interest for gardening,” Veronica stated. “A lot of people started making backyard gardens, which led them to composting, which also led them to me!”
