The Winds of Change – A Poem for Palestine

The wind picks up as it brings a chill,
Carrying from afar echoes left of evil will.

As children are bombed in the night,
I sit on the other side of the world in the morning light.

Their muted screams are carried on the breeze,
And despite the distance, I can hear their pleas.

A cry for help, a cry of sorrow,
From people who don’t know if they’ll live to even see tomorrow.

In the potential final hours of their life,
They beg to be witnessed as they’re murdered in strife.

This is the grief that the winds have blown,
But across the world, seeds of change have also been sown.

Like saplings reaching for the sun with all their might,
People are rising up in love for others, choosing to fight.

Gone are the days when we all just looked away,
Where we pretended that everything in the world was “okay.”

Too long have the masses ignored the oppressed,
No longer will we let those voices be suppressed.

And just as the winds naturally rearrange,
Together, we’ll build a new world on the winds of change.

Author’s Note

This poem came to me after I decided to try to write some poetry in my garden. As I walked outside, a gust of wind hit me, like inspiration punching me in the face, demanding to be put to words.

Please take some time to take action today and do something to demand your representatives call for a ceasefire and an end to the genocide; help refugees in Gaza and Rafah; check out local groups like Nevadans for Palestinian Liberation; or educate yourself on the history of Israel’s occupation of Palestine.

And if you haven’t already, please check out one of the articles we’ve published about the genocide.

Thank you. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
