Red Eye Week at Area 15: Back-to-Back Live Performances and Events

Known for its immersive entertainment district, Area 15 lined up a selection of daily performances for Red Eye Week from April 14 to April 20. This week of live performances paired with Area 15’s established events added to the famous universe of art, music, and adventure.

The venue located in Area 15, known as The Wall, saw the bands take to the stage. Bar Italia is from London, UK, and the Host Family is from Los Angeles, California. With unique sounds, both bands took to the stage, and the crowd was all ears at the beginning of each set.

Host Family

The Los Angeles band opened the show ahead of their recent self-released singles. Four days prior, they released two brand new singles, ‘Two Months, Next Year’ and ‘Splinter’. With two new singles and four already self-released, the band played six songs for the crowd. With dreamy vocals on top of a guitar sound all their own, they were for sure attention-grabbing. This was particularly exhibited by the singer, Imogen Lolos, during her performance, where she moved around the stage and then transitioned into a calm state before she resumed singing.

Movement was triggered by the band’s sound and tempo changes throughout the set. Todd Knaak’s hard-hitting drums and Cameron Burt’s bass playing held the rhythm section. The warm-sounding rhythm guitar strums and screeching guitars soaked with effects from guitarists Spencer Stange and Zac Hernandez only complimented the vocals and performance of the band as a whole.

Bar Italia has been on tour supporting the two albums they released last year on Matador Records. Their first release was ‘Tracey Denim’ on May 19, 2023, followed by ‘The Twits’ on November 3, 2023. With a total of four albums and two EPs, they had a variety of songs from which to choose. They took the stage and instantly let out a wall of sound that only they could conjure up. It was an explosive start, with guitar players Sam Fenton and Jezmi Tarik Fehmi coming in with strongly distorted guitars to pair with the vocals from Nina Cristante.

The crowd instantly connected with the band as they approached the stage closer for a better look at the performers. With a variety of fast, slow, and mid-intricate songs mixed with each member exchanging vocal duties, each song felt like a surprise. Altogether, it was a collection of great songs, a great crowd, and a great venue.

Towards the end of the set, the band played their most hard-hitting songs, ‘Polly Armour’ and ‘World Greatest Emoter,’ which caused a small mosh pit to occur for the duration of the songs. The music took over the fans, releasing emotions among others who felt the same. Excitement and energy overtook, leading to bashing, head banging, mouthing of words, and smiling. The crowd absorbed the music, and they reciprocated with full energy.

On College Night, students who present valid IDs receive up to 20 tokens to use on any of the 12 pinball machines, pool tables, and 32 classic and new arcade games that surround the bar inside and outside.
