Red, Black, White, Green – A Poem for Palestine

‘Red, Black, White, Green’ – A poem about the colors of the Palestinian flag and how they can represent many things.

Red is the blood that’s been spilled for months and years,
And black is the deep well of sorrow and tears.
White is the silence that fuels great evil,
And green is the greed that pays for such upheaval.

Red is the rage that the whole world moans.
And black is the soul loss we all feel in our bones.
White is the emptiness that it so heavily imparts,
And green is the disgust that we feel in our hearts.

But red is also the beautiful courage that we see,
And black is our power, solid and strong as we fight to be free.
White is the truth that shines through the lies in the night,
And green is the hope that we will soon set things right.

Red is the love we hold for each other,
And black is the line we draw to protect those who suffer.
White is the relief we will someday know,
And green is the olive tree that will so beautifully grow.

I wrote this poem in honor of the Palestinian people and those martyred in the ongoing genocide carried out by Israel with the backing of the US. And, it is to honor the students and those around the world demanding action and accountability by the ruling class, to divest from Israel, to liberate all people, and to end this and all other genocides.

I intend this to highlight the seriousness of this moment in history and the resilience people have shown as they continue to fight for liberation.
