Plastic, Plastic, Everywhere

Plastic plastic everywhere,
Everything is plastic, does no one care?

Bags and bottles flying around,
Microplastics in the air and in the ground.

The saying is “Out of sight out of mind”,
Until it’s not, as we now find.

We’ve thrown our trash out with not a care in the world,
From landfills to garbage patches in the ocean – our waste has unfurled.

We all think our trash simply goes “away”,
But as we are fast discovering, it’s all here to stay.

Because plastic doesn’t simply break down,
It just becomes smaller, as we’ve now found.

Instead the sun breaks it up into smaller and smaller pieces,
And with plastic production going up – the amount in the world only increases.

Now that we’re feeling the effects of our actions,
The people who are supposed to lead us only give us distractions.

They want us to buy things and to just ignore,
That what’s happening in the world we’re all responsible for.

From the top down we all must change,
From governments and corporations to consumers and all within range.

For if we want our children and our planet to have a future that is bright,
We all must do our part – and do so with all of our might.

This issue will never disappear,
So face it must, before it gets more severe.

But all hope is not lost and please don’t despair,
Because we still have a chance – there’s still time to care.
