Maxan Jazz
Tucked away in the heart of Chinatown, Maxan Jazz – a one-of-a-kind jazz and sushi experience – offers locals a delightful mix of great music and food. Located at 4130 S. Decatur Blvd., this nightclub/restaurant aims to combine jazz bands and independent performing musical artists with high-end Japanese tapas-style food. The restaurant opened its doors just three months ago.
The Inspiration Behind Maxan Jazz
The owner of the venue, Max Wirjo, originally from Indonesia, has lived in Las Vegas since 2012 after retiring from a medical career in California. He and his wife, both lovers of jazz and music in general, realized through their travels that most live music venues lacked quality food to match the entertainment. So Wirjo thought of a solution. He observed the increased popularity of sushi, small plates with modern restaurant diners, and people’s love for live music in intimate spaces. He also recognized that Japanese cuisine and jazz music complimented one another perfectly. Who would have thought?
Observing the increasing popularity among modern restaurant diners for sushi and small plate options, Wirjo combined that with people’s love for live music in intimate spaces. As a result, he found that Japanese cuisine and jazz music perfectly complemented each other. And thus, Maxan Jazz was born.
Delicious Delicacies
The culinary team at Maxan Jazz is both as reputable as they are talented. With an extensive menu of delicacies, guests may enjoy dishes including grilled and fried seafood, all types of sushi, salads, and more. While seafood is the focus of this sharable yet concise menu, the restaurant also offers a selection of wine and other beverages.
With menu highlights such as the raw smoked salmon, the garlic shrimp, and the miso black cod, it’s difficult to leave with your tastebuds unsatisfied.
The chefs at Maxan will continue to expand their menu seasonally and feature high-end ingredients such as Uni and A-5 Wagyu beef. Due to the seasonal availability of fresh ingredients, prices are subject to change periodically to reflect changes in market values.
Tantalizing Tunes
While the food at Maxan Jazz is fantastic and reasonably priced, the live music and welcoming atmosphere seal the deal as far as food and entertainment experiences go. Newly renovated with a full bar, the club hosts live music six nights a week from 6 pm-11 pm and closes on Tuesdays.
Wirjo plans to expand the club’s music style to include R&B, Latin jazz, Brazilian jazz, Afro-Cuban jazz, and even Romani jazz, also known as “jazz manouche.”
Check out the restaurant’s calendar to see what artists are playing at Maxan Jazz in the coming weeks. While there’s no cover charge, a $25 food and beverage minimum is enforced at the restaurant, with a $40 minimum on Friday & Saturday nights.

Overcoming The Obstacles
While opening the business during an economic downturn, Mirjo is optimistic for the future.
He shared that although the restaurant has been slightly understaffed since opening, it hasn’t posed too much of a problem from an operational standpoint, and he’s not worried.
Wirjo believes in his concept and believes that anyone who gives Maxan Jazz a chance will be convinced. Experiencing the restaurant firsthand, I must admit I’m a believer.
This unique jazz/sushi club is not only cutting-edge and eclectic but also imparts some of the fundamental concepts that make Las Vegas what it is. It’s a combination you wouldn’t expect, and most importantly, it’s an example of everything happening all at once in a city that never stops: a mashup of perfection that only Vegas could give birth to and a mutual agreement that our city paves the way for innovative restaurant/entertainment concepts.
My Personal Experience at Maxan Jazz
When I first discovered that there was a new food/music venue right around the corner from my apartment, I couldn’t wait to hear more about this one-of-a-kind place. Initially, I felt skeptical as to how this music and cuisine would be able to pair with one another successfully. But, when I visited the restaurant for this interview, my reservations melted away the second I walked in the door and felt the unique energy inside Maxan. The band of the night, “Lumiere Noire,” had a French classic Creole feeling, while the ambiance was dark yet modern with an “off the beaten path” exclusive underground VIP vibe. The food was just as delicious as the live entertainment. I quickly realized that this experience was something for tourists and locals alike, but more importantly, something not to be missed by anyone. This place is Las Vegas all the way.
