Katie Castro Pottery – Crafting Creative Ceramics

As an incredibly versatile art form, ceramics provides us with many things like vases, planters, bowls, and other pottery. Local ceramic artist Katie Castro makes her own and sells them through her shop, Katie Castro Pottery. Each piece is unique, with a bright and diverse color range, as Castro does not repeat shapes or color combinations throughout her works.

Pottery Journey

Castro started working with clay in 2016 and couldn’t stop. While in high school, Castro knew she wanted to refine and further her skills, so she took classes and developed a deep passion for pottery. She went to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for sculpture and minoring in art history, from which she earned a bachelor’s in the spring of 2022. In the future, Castro wants to further her education and get a master’s in fine arts.

Castro enjoyed her time at UNLV but wishes the art department had more to offer for ceramics. Castro states, “I would not recommend it for someone specifically interested in pottery due to no wheel-throwing courses offered.”

Selling Her Ceramics

This didn’t keep Castro from expressing her love for pottery. At the beginning of 2022, she started Katie Castro Pottery after seeing the number of pieces she had accumulated. She explains, “I want to share what I make with as many people as possible, and the best way to do that is through exhibitions and sales.”

Las Vegas is notably a tourist attraction, so for the local artist, it means a lot of competition. Castro has gained success despite this. Although she has slowed down, Castro attends farmer markets and other events in the valley to showcase and sell her creations. Occasionally, she can be found at the monthly First Friday Festival in the Arts District Downtown.

She is grateful for her degree and the opportunities to showcase her art through group exhibitions held by the Clark County Public Arts. In the future, she hopes to have more options to feature her art in more shows locally and create an online presence for her business.

Get in Motion With Katie Castro Pottery

For those interested in pottery, Castro says to “throw yourself into pottery wholeheartedly.”

“I always tell people it is just like golfing,” she said. “It’s not fun until you’re good, and once you’re good, it’s the most fun you’ll ever have.”

If you want to avoid experiencing the trial and error phase of learning something new or just want to appreciate handmade goods and value supporting artists, support Katie Castro Pottery and help her reach her goals.

In addition to selling her creations at pop-up events, she also sells through her own website, Etsy, and on her Instagram. There, admirers will find beautiful imagery in her pieces and process.

Castro advises artists to keep doing what they love because their audience will like it. When combined with passion, hard work, and determination can go a long way.
