Happy Earth Market: A Collective Community Space

Built for the community, Happy Earth Market, a local creative center, provides an inclusive environment for locals to express themselves and interact with others.

Founded in 2017, H.E.M. is the only cultural space in town that offers daily workshops on various topics. It acts as an incubator for local creatives and entrepreneurs, helping them start their own businesses.

These include sustainable living, self-help, painting, writing, and performing arts. And they sell unique gifts and locally handcrafted goods on a consignment basis.

“Work On Your Self w/ Sam gives journaling techniques like this one. She’s going to be adding another day of WOYS for those that can’t make it on Wednesdays, so keep your eyes out for that!” -H.E.M. Facebook

Impacts of the Pandemic

Samantha French, the owner of Happy Earth Market, shared how the pandemic has impacted H.E.M.

“We were forced to close during the lockdown, which set us back a lot,” she explained. “Once we were able to open back up again, we couldn’t host open-mics and rarely had a visitor.”

“Thankfully, we have an extremely loving community that raised money on their own through selling services [and] art, and even gave some haircuts to get us out of the red with our landlord.”

Regarding the changes made, French stated, “We’ve always sanitized the space daily, but now we use anti-Earth chemicals.”

They also wear masks and limit how many people come in at once.

The best way people can help support the business is by visiting them at the shop.

“You have to experience Happy Earth Market for yourself – it’s a different thing for each individual who comes in,” French said. “If you are a human in need of validation, compassion, and love, you will find it here.”
