Dylan’s Family Ice Cream Beats the Heat With Cool Treats

Dylan’s Family Ice Cream Beats the Heat With Cool Treats

Dylan’s Family Ice Cream, located just off of Losee and Tropical, brings together families to beat the heat with everyone’s favorite treat. This family-owned ice cream shop is the place to enjoy delicious ice cream any day. On September 22, there will also be a special deal for National Ice Cream Cone Day, where everyone can enjoy a cone with an ice cream flavor (or two) of their choice.

Becoming ‘Dylan’s Family Ice Cream’

Dylan’s Family Ice Cream opened in early 2015 as Dillen’s Family Ice Cream, formerly owned by Paul Dillen and his sweet wife. A few years after opening, a frequent customer, Brandy, purchased the shop for her sweet son Dylan. In 2021, the shop passed ownership again to Brandy’s dear friend and current owner, Cheryl Artega.

Brandy acquired the shop from the Dillens when they prepared to retire and move out of state. As frequent customers, no one was a bigger fan of Dillen’s than her sweet two-year-old son, Dylan. Initially, Brandy declined, feeling uncertain this was the right step for the family. Shortly after, at a military family barbecue, Brandy and her family of five attended with her husband, a military service member.

In an unfortunate and heartbreaking incident at this event, their son, Dylan, drowned. Devastated, Brandy decided to buy Dillen’s Family Ice Cream to honor her son and commemorate Dylan’s love for this place. In 2021, Brandy’s husband was restationed, and the family moved away. Brandy entrusted the story of Dylan’s and its care to her dear friend Cheryl, who works hard to keep the shop open today.

Running the Shop

Artega also works full-time as a social worker for the school district and lets the shop run itself. Many different family members, along with many college students, help run Dylan’s. Emphasizing the importance of education, Artega views this shop as a way to contribute to the community, helping kids earn money while in school and creating memories for families just like Brandy’s.

“It’s really just a place of business where families can come, enjoy ice cream, and feel like home,” says Artega. The shop mostly maintains itself and does not generate much revenue. There are many times when Artega pulled out of her own pocket to keep the shop open to the community and Dylan’s story alive.
