About Dragon Castle Books

When you first walk into Dragon Castle Books, you are hit with that old book smell, tall bookshelves that reach the ceiling, and hundreds upon hundreds of books. In this unique bookstore, you can get lost for hours exploring all of the books they offer.
Dragon Castle Books is a family-owned and operated general used book store specializing in science fiction and graphic novels, but carrying all genres, including comic books and audiobooks.
As the years go by, small bookstores are becoming increasingly rare. It’s important that we keep these bookstores alive. Here in Las Vegas, there’s a special little bookstore on Rainbow Boulevard. Dragon Castle Books first opened its doors more than 10 years ago in September 2014.
“Our family has always been big on books and reading, and it was always a dream of ours to open a used bookstore. So when the space and inventory became available a little over ten years ago, we jumped at the opportunity,” said Dan R Brown Jr., the store manager. “We rearranged the shelves and discovered we had enough room to add several more bookcases. Eventually, we ran out of shelf space and had to expand into the unit next to ours.”
How They Run the Store

Dragon Castle Books is strictly a used bookstore; however, they carry a wide variety of book genres, enough to suit any reader. Dragon Castle has many rows and shelves of books. You could be in there for hours sifting through the different titles. The store accepts any books as a donation and occasionally takes book trade-ins.
“And very, very, very selectively do we pay cash for books. When it comes to what we pay cash for, what we are willing to buy is mostly non-fiction, but it all depends on the book. Our buying hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 am until 5 pm,” Brown Jr. says.
The bookstore has many unique sections as well. In one section, they have beautiful leatherbound classics such as ‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘Brave New World,’ and ‘The Iliad.’ They also have first edition Dr. Seuss books like ‘Green Eggs and Ham.’

Surviving in the Digital Age

It’s especially difficult in the digital era to be an independent bookstore.
“I can’t and won’t speak for everyone in the industry, but some challenges newly opened independent bookstores face include, but are not limited to: letting the public actually know they exist, inventory management, theft, and online retailers,” Brown said.
Technology is constantly advancing, hastening the extinction of the independent bookstore. According to oedb.org, E-books account for about $3.2 billion of the market. Most people have turned to digital forms of reading for ease and convenience.
#GetinMotion with Dragon Castle Books

“The most rewarding thing about working at Dragon Castle Books is all the books. Being surrounded by them, talking about them, and reading them,” Brown Jr. said.
The best way to support small bookstores is to spread the word and of course to visit the stores. Support Dragon Castle Books by donating books to their store and promoting their business.
The store is located at 3142 N. Rainbow Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89031. They are open Monday-Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
You can keep up with the bookstore on Facebook, Instagram, and their website.
