Get Organized Day

Do you ever feel like everything in your life is just scattered? Lost? Or just such a mess that you cannot even think straight? Reset things today for Get Organized Day! This obscure holiday reminds people to commit themselves to organize their thoughts, items, and lives.

How to Celebrate Get Organized Day

Get Organized Day is celebrated this year on April 26th. To celebrate, all you need to do is declutter all of your mess. This means to open up those drawers you throw everything in, and empty them out! Go through your closet and dump out all of the unnecessary clothing. Donate what you don’t need or haven’t worn in forever to an organization that gives clothes directly to the houseless community in your area.

With organizing your thoughts and your life, take the time to pull out a calendar or your planner and jot down every single thing you have to do for the next month. Start the habit of making yourself a daily to-do list of three to five things that you want to accomplish that day. Keep your list short and reasonable, honoring your time and energy, and not setting yourself up for “failure” by piling too much on your plate.

Disorganization manifests in many ways, so having a day where we prioritize all the clutter that affects our day-to-day lives benefits our mental health. But don’t wait for a holiday once a year to work on improving your organizational skills. Instead, strive to work on it as often as possible.

This not only reduces clutter, it reduces stress and overall, improves your mental and physical health.

Impacts of Disorganization

Disorganization often manifests as a symptom of several different health issues and exacerbates them further. According to Robin Hurtado, a geriatric outpatient care coordinator at Piedmont Healthcare, “Excessive clutter and disorganization are often symptoms of a bigger health problem, such as attention deficit disorder (ADD), depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.”

Disorganization oftentimes makes individuals feel stressed, depressed, and/or feel an excessive amount of anxiety. Therefore, improving and maintaining organization plays an important role in our everyday lives and health.

Benefits of Organization

Maintaining and improving organization skills enables one to think with a clear head. According to Organizeyourlife.org, “One of the most important benefits of organizing your space is reduced stress.”

In fact, an excessive amount of stress can actually lead to premature death in some people. Therefore, one could argue that staying organized can literally save one’s life in the long run.

Improving organization skills helps both mental and physical health. Staying organized enables one to keep a clear head, stay on track of important events and dates written out, and have all items placed neatly. This makes it easier to remember and find things in the midst of the chaos of our daily lives. By doing these things, one’s life can change drastically.
