Be Late for Something Day

With an abundance of obscure holidays to choose from in our country, one holiday in particular stuck out to me. Created by the Procrastinators Club of America, we celebrate ‘National Be Late to Something Day’ on September 5th. Founded by Les Waas in 1956, the organization’s motto is “to promote the philosophy of relaxation through putting off until later those things that needn’t be done today.” A motto that is, dare I say, not very common nowadays.

After stumbling upon this holiday, I wondered how best to celebrate it. If there were any best practices, I wanted to be mindful of them when celebrating. One suggestion that kept showing up was to “Be late to something on purpose. But be considerate to the people waiting for you – call them ahead and let them know you are running late.” It’s fairly common sense if you ask me, but an excellent suggestion nonetheless.

How I’m Celebrating

Living in a busy society, this holiday interested me. As a society, we’ve adopted this notion of constantly being on the move, or what many people call ‘Hustle Culture.’ I’ve never really been a huge fan of hustle culture. I feel that it’s just another reason to get upset with ourselves for not being as productive or busy as others believe we should be. Even in 1956, hustle culture was so prevalent that someone created a day to relax and sleep in without any guilt for being late.

This day falls on a Tuesday this year, so typically, people have work or school to attend, both of which usually frown upon tardiness. With work and school to attend on this day, I plan to sleep in a bit before work. I believe one day of tardiness doesn’t take away from the fact that I work hard and deserve to sleep in a bit and celebrate this holiday the way I want.

Life is all about balance. So, if you read this and want to celebrate this holiday, I say go for it! You deserve those extra minutes of sleep or spare time for whatever you want or need.

Happy National ‘Be Late to Something Day,’ and remember to stop and smell the roses today.
