Fashion allows people to express themselves through their appearance. However, the people behind the clothes hardly get recognition, especially if they’re smaller designers. Despite this obstacle, local fashion designer Debra Storey specializes in high-fashion evening gowns and cocktail wear through her brand, the Blazzian Collection.

Like many people, Storey’s interest in being a designer started as a child. “I used to collect Barbie dolls and used to mix and match their dresses,” she said. “This is where my passion for fashion ignited.” In addition, her mother owned a lingerie import and export business in the Philippines, where she picked up on the basic structure of the clothing industry.

Storey began developing her sewing skills in 2014 as she attended the International Academy of Design in Technology in Henderson, Nevada. While studying, she knew she wanted to be a fashion designer, but decided the time wasn’t right because she wanted to focus on raising her family. When that time came in 2020, Storey created Blazzian Collection.

Blazzian Collection derives from Storey’s background as a Black Filipino, with a unique spelling of the word ‘Blasian.’ This name rings true to who she is, and she describes it as the perfect brand name. The brand has seen immense success, from its opening in 2020 to the current Blazzian Collection.

As the brand owner, Storey is a Las Vegas Fashion Council member who receives opportunities to showcase her talents while growing Blazzian Collection. As a result of this relationship, Storey receives invitations to exhibit her designs at events, which led to her participation in the Little Black Dress competition in 2021, where she emerged as the winner. “It was extremely exciting and fun,” Storey said. “I was invited to have my garments in a few clothing boutiques in Tivoli Village Summerlin.”

On top of winning in 2021, Storey continues to prove she is a designer to watch by winning the Little Black Dress 2022 Emerging Fashion Designer category in addition to the Social Media Voting category on December 1st. “It was such an amazing and humbling experience,” she said. “I truly appreciate everyone who voted for my design online and at the actual event.” According to Storey, this opportunity brings her additional attention and provides her with the chance to collaborate with local artists.

Getting through the pandemic was a struggle for many and especially hard on business owners. Having launched her business the year the pandemic began, Storey was forced to put a pause on Blazzian Collection in the beginning. Storey shared that the time period was a little depressing for her, but she could still embrace her passion by creating cute face masks.

Multiple independent designers have emerged in recent years and need our support, especially with the fast fashion boom.

In particular, designs by independent creators were reportedly stolen by fast fashion companies like Fashion Nova and Shein. The practice of ripping-off designers barely gets coverage since the designers tend to be smaller.

As consumers, we need to support our local designers as much as possible. Thankfully, Storey hasn’t personally experienced theft of her work; nonetheless, she agreed that supporting each other helps build everyone up.

“It all starts with us. If we support our own, there’s nothing impossible to achieve,” she said. “I love buying from small businesses.”
